A new report from the Entertainment Software Association is uncovering the economic contributions made by the video game industry to the American economy during the period 2005-2009.
Here are the key learnings about the U.S. computer and video game software publishing industry:
- Added value to U.S. GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2009: $4.9 billion.
- achieved retail sales of $10.5 billion in 2009 (273 million game units).
- Annual growth rate for 2005-2009: 10.6% (vs. 1.4% for the U.S. economy).
- Directly employs 32,000 people (average annual compensation in 2009: $89,781). 12,000 are employed by publishing firms, 20,000 by developers.
- Employs 120,000 people overall (includes games stores and related jobs).
- 41% of employees are located in one of these states: California, Texas, Washington, New York, Massachusetts and Illinois.
